In Guitar Lingo What does "Fully Shielded Pickups" and "Big Block Tremolo" Mean?
When i bought my strat i asked what "Updated" Meant and he told me that it was a mexican strat but it had "Fully Shielded" Pickups and a "big Block" Tremolo and jumbo frets like the new amarican strats have. i love the guitar and it was a great price i just want to know what "Fully Shielded Pickups" and "Big Block Tremolo" Mean. thanks in advance!
fully shielded pickups is mostly BS. In theory, it's supposed to stop RF from causing 60 cycle hum. It's done by taking a thin strip of copper tape and wraping it around the pickup, then soldering a lead from the ground lead to the tape. It's supposed to be the same as grounding a guitar (i.e. closing an open loop). It dosnt cause any trouble, and some say it changes the tone, but there's no absolute need for it. The big block tremelo refers to the metal block that the trem springs, strings, and bridgeplate mount to. On older MIM strats they had a smaller trem block. This resulted in a smaller and more dimished sounding tone. The larger block is trying to replicate the sound of the blocks from the 50's and 60's with a bolder tone. It also helps in having a better acoustic volume. They arnt bad guitars at all. I've played several, and taken even more apart. I'd buy one if I had some play money.
