What are the Differences Between Memory Foam and Coil Spring Mattresses?
What are the Differences Between Memory Foam and Coil Spring Mattresses?
It has been over 140 years since the invention of the coil spring mattress. The modern coil spring mattress is only slightly different than the original. When you actually stop to think about the coil spring mattress it doesn’t seem too comfortable. There is a bed of springs covered by softer material. Without the softer outside material there would be no comfort at all. In that last 140 years there have been world altering inventions and progress beyond what anyone would have imagined back then. The quality of life has improved drastically, yet the coil spring mattress is virtually unchanged.
Now there is an alternative to the coil spring mattress: memory foam. The memory foam mattress supports your entire body because the foam conforms to your shape. The coil spring mattress creates an opposite effect, where your body needs to fit to the mattress. This causes pressure on your body. Your body is constantly forcing itself against the springs as the springs are constantly forcing themselves against your body. Sounds more like a fight than a good night’s sleep.
The memory foam offers no resistance to your body weight. It doesn’t push back so your body is able to keep its shape while the foam changes. This allows your body to relax and not feel pressure. Your weight is spread even over the memory foam and when you move the foam will absorb the movement, so a sleeping partner is not disturbed.
Memory foam also differs from coil spring in that it can keep a consistent temperature. The foam will regulate itself depending on your temperature. It actually takes in your heat and becomes soft. This draws heat from your body and keeps you comfortable.
In order to find out for sure if the memory foam mattress if for you, visit a mattress store. Do a test between a memory foam mattress and a coil spring. You will notice the difference.
