Where are the pick ups in an Acoustic-Electric guitar and how do they work?

I'm just interested in how Acoustic-Electrics actually work. I have a theory as to how they do, because in all Line 6 guitars the pick ups are in the bridge, but i don't know if that is the same as in Acoustic-Electrics?

Most acoustic-electrics use piezo-electric pickups in the bridge. Piezos translate pressure into a voltage, but since they are a very high impedance device they require an on-board preamp.

One exception I've seen lately is Epiphone with it's Ultra II series. They mount a small magnetic pickup (I think they call it a Nanomag) near the end of the fingerboard.

But, the Line 6 Variax guitars use the piezo system. In fact, there are six of them, as each string gets processed separately in that guitar.
