How do I record my electric guitar on a free recording software?

So I just recently bought a Line6 PodXt Live Multi Effects System, and guitar center told me that a recording system was a free download online however that seems to be not the case. I looked up on Audacity and was wondering if that would record my guitar being sent to the computer throught the effects pedal and be recorded with the tones and sounds on it. So can someone help me do this or tell me if I am able to, or if there actually is a free download for Line 6 users can someone direct me to it?

Yes Audacity should work for you. Audacity will alow you to select the recording source so it would be LINE IN or if you also do some mixing through your soundcard you may want to select WHAT YOU HEAR. It will use lots of hard drive space. It also has vst plugins that can be found for free and you can add effects not available on your POD. When the songs are complete you can also export them to mp3 format to save on drive space.
