I was told to stay away from the Fender Hot Rod deluxe. why?

in terms of buying a new amp
when you say high/ low end what are the ranges you are referring to?

Everybody has an opinion, I've actually heard nothing but good things about the amp. Its all about what type of sound you are looking for. Whats nice about the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is they are loud for gigs, got that great Fender clean tone, and the 40watts of tube power.

I play solo guitar, I go for a really clean jazz like tone. I find that I get it really well out of a Fender Twin Reverb (which would be higher end Fender amp) but I don't have that kind of money. I get pretty close with solid state amps. So, I've become a fan of Fender Solid State amplifiers. The one I own is a Fender FM25. A lot of people said that amp was garbage, stay away. But I get the tone I'm after, so I love it. And the price is right.

My point is, don't listen to people's opinions. I found that some people offer an opinion and they play like shit, thats why it sounds bad.

Check them out for yourself, I think you may really like them if it matches your style.

EDIT: I'm not saying I get the same great tone out of my little SS that I do from the Fender Twin. I'm just saying I'm happy with the tone I get.
