Is there a program for Windows (XP or Vista), Mac similar to GarageBand?

A program that can record any instrument and is easily amended to include grunge, metal, accent, and all other things without necessarily having to work with a different distortion pedal for the recording?

My son Guitar Pro in Vista. I do not know how it works, but it is metal and basic math, etc. plays keyboards and blends in music. I am no expert and it is not here, so I can not ask. Good luck.
