What should I do with my big ugly fireplace insert?

I just bought a new house that has a big ugly brown and brass fireplace insert from Elmira. I know next to nothing about fireplaces so I need some advice. What do inserts do? is it better to have the insert or remove it? how do i remove it? what do i need to check first? what is the perferred way to have a fireplace (insert vs no insert). What can we do?

We had that insert and it saves a lot of money if you have your own wood, some people take them out and have Natural Gas inserts instead, it's a matter of taste, the only thing against it that I have is the dust, other than that they are a good source of heat and they are also very expensive to buy . If you take it out you will have an open space and the wind will come down the chimney even if the flue is closed, at least you have the glass door to act as an insulator if you are not using it , than if the Hydro goes out you will be able to keep warm by lighting a fire .
